Germany Bundesliga 1
(03 Mar 2018)
RB Leipzig – Borussia Dortmund
Match Preview: Bundesliga top four hopefuls meet
Three straight defeats in all competitions mean that RB Leipzig is in danger of missing out on Champions League qualification through the domestic Bundesliga route and finishing in the top four. One of those losses was their Europa League last-32 second-leg against Napoli, and the Germans still advanced on away goals, so winning the secondary European competition remains a possibility.
Back at home, though, defeats to Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Cologne have left RB in sixth place and a point from fourth. However, there are just three points between Borussia Dortmund in second and sixth place, so a lot could change in the remaining 10 matchdays.
Match Preview: Standings
It should not be overlooked that this is just Leipzig’s second top-flight campaign in their history, but they have spent enough money and have the personnel to compete with the best in Germany having finished as runners-up last season – that is what makes Saturday evening’s game against Borussia Dortmund so interesting.
Borussia has emerged as the nearest challengers to Bayern Munich, though with a 19-point gap claiming the title is clearly not happening this season. Peter Stöger, in charge until at least the end of the season, is tasked with ensuring his side are in next season’s Champions League as well as challenging for the Europa League trophy – they face RB Salzburg, Leipzig’s sister club, in the next round.
Dortmund has proven difficult to beat in recent weeks, with their last defeat just before Christmas in the DFB-Pokal – a run of 11 fixtures. The club’s goal difference of 19 is substantially better than all other sides – apart from Bayern – and is effectively worth an extra point.
Match Preview: Odds & Markets
Despite the clubs’ contrasting fortunes, the fact that they are at home on Saturday means that Tipbet has RB Leipzig as very slight favourites. There really is very little to choose between the two sides, and RB is at 2.60 with Borussia Dortmund 2.70 to get three points. A draw is at 3.70, though Leipzig has recorded just five all season in the league.
