Italy Serie A
(31 Mar 2018)
Juventus – Milan
Match Preview: A dress rehearsal the Coppa Italia final
After the final international break of the season, Serie A gets straight into potentially make or break matches with Juventus hosting Milan this Saturday. The two teams, confounding pre-season predictions, are aiming for different targets in the remaining nine fixtures, with the Old Lady in top spot but being chased closely by Napoli.
Milan, meanwhile, had a poor first-half of the campaign but have rapidly improved under Gennaro Gattuso and now have an outside chance of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League – their only hope of doing so having been eliminated from the Europa League by Arsenal.
The Rossoneri are the sixth place and five points behind their great rivals Inter, who occupy fourth place. Finishing any higher looks most unlikely as Roma are on 59 points, so there are three teams – including the impressive Lazio – battling for just one berth.
Qualifying for Europe’s elite competition and winning the Coppa Italia in May’s final against Juventus would represent a brilliant season for the club and Gattuso and almost certainly result in the Italian receiving a contract extension.
Excluding the two-legged Arsenal defeat, Milan is unbeaten in 2018 and are on an eight-match winning streak; with matches against Inter and Napoli also on the horizon, a continuation of this form will edge the top four ever closer.
Juve surprisingly drew 0-0 with SPAL before the international break, but they have not lost a match since November and are very much in the driving seat to claim the Scudetto. Napoli is two points behind and the title could well be decided on 22nd April when the two sides meet in Turin.
