Argentina – Iceland
Argentina takes on Iceland in the opening game of Group D in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Also, it will be the first time in history that Argentina has faced Iceland.
Argentina: Argentina finished third in the CONMEBOL qualifying, but had to wait until the last round of qualifying matches to confirm their place in these finals. The team have continued to look a bit shaky in the friendlies leading up to the WC, losing 4-2 against Nigeria and 6-1 against Spain either side of a 2-0 win against Italy. Despite it looking from the outside like Argentina struggled badly in their qualifying campaign, Jorge Sampaoli’s team were, in fact, the second-best team according to performances.
Iceland: Iceland impressively won their qualifying group, finishing ahead of their WC group partners Croatia. They did so on a foundation of solid defending (seven conceded in ten games). Preparing for the WC however, they’ve conceded 11 goals in their last four matches. Anyway, one thing is for sure, this Iceland team should not be underestimated. They have a way of playing and will stick to that, and could frustrate several opponents at this World Cup.
Conclusion: By some way, the third day of World Cup football brings the teams whose contrasts are huge. Argentina is being underestimated coming into this World Cup and can get off to a good start in this game. However, they may find it difficult to break down a determined Iceland side, and so this isn’t expected to be a rout. All in all, we predict an interesting match and a win for Messi’s squad.
